Brief History

Native Americans traveled through this land centuries ago on the Indian Gap Trail. During the 18th century American hunters and trappers used the same trail, but no permanent settlement was established on the site until the early 1800s. The Ogle family built a cabin here, and modern residents can still visit the structure. Now a growing community, the settlement was named for general store owner Radford Gatlin, who was run out of town in 1859 for his Confederate sympathies. But this didn't impede the growing city's progress. Lumber was its main industry, but when Great Smoky Mountains National Park opened in 1934 the focus switched to tourism.
